Pinterest for Photographers: Showcasing and Selling Work

Pinterest sends photographers steady traffic because people search it for the exact shots they're planning, whether that's a wedding, a headshot, or a print for the wall. A pin of your work can lead a searcher straight to your portfolio or print shop, and keep doing it long after you post it.

A single pin can send viewers to your portfolio for years.

Link pins to your portfolio or shop

Every pin should go somewhere. Link your images to the gallery, blog post, or print listing they belong to, not just your homepage. Someone who saves a maternity shot wants to see more of that work or book it, so send them to the page that lets them. A pin with no destination is a missed client.

Crop for the vertical feed

Pinterest favours tall images because they fill more of the screen as people scroll. A lot of photography is shot wide, so make vertical crops for pinning. Reframe a landscape into a portrait pin, or stack two shots into a tall graphic. The crop that reads well in the feed is often not the one you'd print, and that's fine.

Name boards with the words clients search

Photographers get found through the terms people type, so build boards around them. Think about how a client describes what they want:

Keyword-rich board names and pin descriptions put your work in front of the searches that turn into bookings.

Save reference boards at full resolution

Pose and lighting references are part of the job, and many of them live in Pinterest boards you've built for inspiration. Having them offline at full size means you can pull them up on a shoot without scrolling a feed. A download extension like Revapin saves your reference and pose boards to your computer at full resolution, so you can keep a library of setups to work from on location or in the studio.

Link every pin to real work, crop for the vertical feed, and name your boards the way clients search. Pinterest keeps surfacing those pins over time, so a photographer who sets them up well gains a traffic source that books shoots and sells prints on its own schedule.
